My thoughts and experiences with the
JBL EON G2 15" Powered Speakers

JBL DJ equipment Professional DJ JBL speakers

Another nice feature of these speakers is the ability to daisy chain as many JBL EON's as you'd reasonably use. I've had a few wedding receptions and corporate events where I've needed and additional set of speakers. All you do is connect an XLR from one speaker to the next its simply that easy.
These JBL's also have an onboard 3-channel mixer that splits the signal for the highs, mids and lows. There is also separate High Frequency and Low Frequency controls to adjust the power output of each. For some reason, in my opinion, my JBL's hiss a lot when no signal is present. When I speak to industry people and other DJ's they tell me it is because of the high-powered amps, and perhaps a poor quality signal from my mixer. Personally I don't like it, but I know that most everyone will never notice. To help with this, I've added a BBE Sonic Maximizer 382 with Noise Reduction. This piece will be covered in an additional article.

Another thing about these speakers is the credibility of the brand. JBL has been building quality high-grade professional equipment for DJ's and bands for many years. I know as DJ's we are not selling or renting equipment, we are selling our service and ourselves. But there are always a few people at every event and usually grooms that come up and say, "JBL, wow that's high-end "or they will say," Wow, these speakers sound great. It can be a little way to stand apart from hobbyists who use generic or low-grade equipment.

One thing, I am not so happy with and I suppose given the situation it can't be helped is the lack of low-end punch. Now, I maybe over analyzing this and most people wont care, but since these speakers are intended to be up off the ground about 2 to 4 feet above the heads of the audience you will lose some of that low-end bass. To compensate for this JBL has made a 15" powered G2 subwoofer. I personally do not have one. I've sampled it down at my local DJ equipment store and it sounded ok. The configuration is the same as regular G2's so they match and are equally lite. However they are no substitute for a traditional 18" low throw sub. In other words you wont get the traditional bass through your body feel that you'd get in a nightclub. But you know, I wouldn't even want that at a wedding. It's just not appropriate in my opinion.

The JBL's are easily mounted on tripod stands with the built in 35mm receptacle cup. A screw in the back helps to secure the speakers from spinning on the stands.

One other thing that is a bit annoying, but easily corrected is the electrical power supply cord. First off this cord comes in a 15ft length, which is not nearly long enough. I mean you need to realize the plug is located on top of the speaker, which is about 9 feet off the ground. That leaves only 6 feet to get power. You will use extension cords every time with these unless you go out and buy longer cords. The second thing is the connection will loosen on its own during the evening with all the vibrations going on causing a loss of power. This is not acceptable so I've simply added some black duct tape around the fitting to make it more secure.

Also, the fuse is not accessible by us, you need to get a technician to open up the case and replace. Fortunately this has never happened to me since I don't push my G2's too hard. I am always watching the peak LED to alert me to an overload condition and backing off my mixer to compensate.

Other than that, these JBL G2's are the best solution for mobile DJ's. They offer plenty of power and quality, lite weight, great reputation and credibility, they look good and will last you years with proper care.

I recommend they JBL EON G2 series for your next speaker purchase!
